The First Step to Freedom: Abraham Lincoln’s Preliminary Emancipation Proclamation. November 9 and 10, 2012 ▪ New York State Museum lobby, Albany. 9:30am until 5pm. The preliminary Emancipation Proclamation is the only surviving version of the document in Lincoln’s handwriting. This exhibition includes historical background and interpretation of the document as well as a manuscript of a speech written and delivered in New York City in September 1962 by Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. for the Proclamation’s centennial. The First Step to Freedom marks the sesquicentennial of the preliminary Emancipation Proclamation and has traveled to eight other cities across New York State this fall.

There’s a benefit for the Florian family, which lost their home and belongings in a September fire. The benefit is at the Elks Lodge in Nelliston.
